SandboxAQ has made its Switch AI-agent coordination software publicly available at no cost, but its Commons Clause licence restricts commercial resale and keeps it outside OSI-defined open source.
SandboxAQ has made its AI-agent coordination software Switch publicly available at no cost, allowing agents built with Claude Code, Google Agent Development Kit, LangChain, OpenAI tooling and other frameworks to work together in Slack, Microsoft Teams and Discord.
However, despite SandboxAQ calling Switch “open source”, its Apache 2.0 licence with the Commons Clause means it does not qualify as open source under the Open Source Initiative’s definition. The clause prevents users from selling Switch itself or a product or service whose value derives substantially from its functionality, although enterprises can run, modify and redistribute it and build commercial products on top of it.
Switch turns existing chat channels into shared “rooms” where humans and agents share context, resources and conversation history. MCP, APIs and adapters connect agents across providers, reducing dependence on a particular AI ecosystem.
“Every team we talk to has capable agents trapped in separate tools, and a coordination tax eating the productivity those agents were supposed to deliver,” said Mohammed Aboul-Magd, General Manager, SandboxAQ. “If you can message a colleague, you can put an agent to work.”
Switch is the second product in SandboxAQ’s Flint AI portfolio, following the free Flint CLI for local agent evaluation. Its planned Flint Platform will add agent discovery, runtime monitoring and guardrails as a cloud service.
The model gives enterprises free, customer-controlled agent infrastructure while reserving governance and monitoring for the commercial layer. The release therefore adds to a broader trend of AI infrastructure being made source-available while commercial use restrictions remain in place.
