With the launch of the Open Source Institute, the University of Canberra is taking a leap towards a future shaped by collaboration and accessible technology.
The University of Canberra, in collaboration with the ACT Government and NetApp, unveiled the Open Source Institute (OpenSI) today, a pioneering move towards advancing open source technologies. This $2.3 million institute is set to become a global hub for open source research, collaboration, and innovation.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA and Professor Lucy Johnston, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Enterprise of the University, were present at the event along with Pete Lilley, Vice-President and General Manager of Instaclustr by NetApp.
Open source software, like WordPress, Python, and Linux, is known for its accessibility to the public for examination, modification, and distribution.
OpenSI aims to be a leader in open source technology research globally, offering work-integrated learning (WIL) opportunities for IT students. Professor Lucy Johnston stated, “The Open Source Institute will further the University’s research capacity in open source technologies and translate industry-leading thinking and experience into our undergraduate courses.”
Chief Minister Andrew Barr noted the partnership’s significance, stating, “The OpenSI will further Canberra’s position as the knowledge capital, attracting investment and retaining tech talent.”
NetApp’s Pete Lilley added, “With NetApp’s 22 years of commitment to Canberra’s tech sector, OpenSI will serve as a launch pad for the next generation of technology development.”
The partnership will fund an open source-specialized Professorial appointment, three Higher Degree by Research (HDR) scholarships, and three research projects, focusing on data solutions at scale, cyber security, AI, and open source business models.
The University’s Faculty of Science and Technology will collaborate with NetApp to integrate skills development in open source systems, software, and tools into its IT courses.
The launch of OpenSI promises to reshape innovation and education, making Canberra a hub for open source technology advancement globally.
