CableLabs and Telecom Infra Project have announced the successful validation of new interoperable hardware and software, version 2.9, for OpenWiFi.
In a significant milestone for the OpenWiFi community, the successful validation of new interoperable hardware and software for open source WiFi is expected to help accelerate the adoption of open source WiFi solutions. According to Josh Redmore, principal architect for wireless access technologies at CableLabs, “This new version of OpenWiFi leverages open source software and hardware to greatly reduce the barrier to entry of deploying managed Wi-Fi.”
CableLabs and the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) have successfully validated new interoperable hardware and software for open source WiFi. This new version of OpenWiFi is built on the uCentral communication layer and supports Multi Pre-Shared Key, allowing devices to connect to multiple access points with a single password.
OpenWiFi is a community-developed open source platform that includes a cloud controller SDK and an enterprise-grade access point (AP) firmware, designed and validated to work seamlessly together.
The refreshed OpenWiFi Community Lab will serve as a testing ground and demonstration stage for global cable operators, which is expected to help operators reduce the cost of deploying and managing Wi-Fi networks, while also improving the quality of service for end-users. This new initiative is part of CableLabs’ ongoing collaboration with TIP to support open roaming between WiFi networks.
