The Open Source FPGA Foundation has announced its formation as a nonprofit organization focused on accelerating worldwide awareness and widespread adoption of open source FPGA technology. The OSFPGA Foundation will work to democratise and promote FPGA technology by providing an open, user-focused, inclusive, and collaborative environment.

Dr. Naveed Sherwani, Co-Chairman, at Open Source FPGA Foundation said, “The Open Source FPGA Foundation will serve to enhance the spectrum of innovation for FPGAs globally. There is a very strong demand for more flexible designs, open source tools and methodology will allow for much greater innovation in the FPGA design space. We thank all our partners for their strong support of our launch and look forward to working with our members to drive the true democratization of FPGA technology.”

Both innovation and best practices

Open source technology will be a critical component for FPGA companies and will help raise industry-wide capabilities by sharing both innovation and best practices. It said that the OSFPGA Foundation will ensure that tools are of highest quality, meet and exceed industry standards, and are fully open sourced. The foundation will assist in enabling solutions to all FPGA-related software and hardware problems. It will increase commercial confidence that open source hardware and software are low-risk and long-term viable options. OSFPGA will work to provide broad educational opportunities to facilitate FPGA technologies.

The Open Source FPGA Foundation will follow governance practices consistent with other open source projects, including having a Board of Directors, Technical Steering Committees, and community contributors from both industry and academia who will work collaboratively together on the mission of the Foundation.
