Last year the company bought GitHub, the leading Git-based open-source code collaboration site, for $7.5 billion and open-sourced its patent portfolio.

Microsoft is becoming more open towards the Open Source community. The acquisition of GitHub has already validated its commitment towards the open-source world. Now, the software giant is further increasing its focus on the open-source ecosystem.

Going by a LinkedIn profile of a Security Program Manager II, the Windows Core OS is likely to rely even more on open-source components.

The profile reads:  Confidential Program requiring Machine Learning/Data Science knowledge and Program Management skillset to ensure the Security of Windows Core OS from malicious actors and code. Improved the security posture of Windows Open Source Components through initiatives that investigate vulnerabilities found and establish a process for remediation. Improved the overall Program Management skill set, communication, and collaboration throughout the WDG IS organization.

Open-source releases by Microsoft last year

Microsoft, under the leadership of Satya Nadella, is investing more and more in open source. 2018 was filled with big open-sources surprises from Microsoft. Last year the company bought GitHub, the leading Git-based open-source code collaboration site, for $7.5 billion and open-sourced its patent portfolio.

Microsoft joined the Open Invention Network (OIN), an open-source patent consortium, and made their 60,000+ patents available.

In 2018, it also added OpenSSH, Curl, and Tar support to Windows 10.

More distributions were added to WSL (Windows Subsystem for Linux). Microsoft also open-sourced a WSL sample to make it easier for other Linux distributions to “port” to WSL and become available via the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft announced their Linux-powered Azure Sphere IoT platform.
