Mozilla launches a Rs. 1 crore fund to support open source projects in India

Mozilla has announced the ‘Global Mission Partners: India’, an award programme to focus on supporting open source. The initiative is a part of the company’s existing ‘Mission Partners’ program and is aimed to support open source and free software projects with a total funding of Rs. 1 crore.

The program is accepting applications from all over India. Also, Mozilla has agreed to support every project that furthers company’s mission. The company has identified that there are a plenty of software projects in the country that need the active backing.

“Our mission, as embodied in our Manifesto, is to ensure the Internet is a global public resource, open and accessible to all; an Internet that truly puts people first, where individuals can shape their own experience and are empowered, safe and independent,” the company writes in a blog post.

The minimum incentive for each successful applicant in the ‘Global Mission Partners: India’ initiative is Rs 125,000. However, applicants can win the support up to Rs 50 lakh. The company invites applicants of the initial batch to apply for the award program in English or Hindi by September 30.

Participating projects must need to have an OSI open source or an FSF free software license. Also, the applicants must be based in India. You can read all the explicit conditions from Mozilla’s wiki page.
