Linux 4.11 release candidate

Linux creator Linus Torvalds has announced the first release candidate of the upcoming Linux 4.11 kernel. The new release includes a few changes in Linux 4.10 final build.

Two weeks after opening the merge window, Torvalds has brought the first release candidate of Linux 4.11. The build comes in a small file size that includes some minor changes to the core kernel.

“This looks like a fairly regular release. It is on the smallish side, but mainly just compared to 4.9 and 4.10 – so it is not really _unsually_ small,” writes Torvalds in a mailing list announcement.

There are updates to vfs, RTC and NFC client. The Linux team has also upgraded some drivers and fixed issues with ARM chips and networking modules.

Development cycle of Linux 4.11 begins

With the latest announcement, the development cycle of Linux 4.11 kernel series has begun. You can expect to see the final build of new Linux sometime in the last week of April. But before the final release, the development cycle will introduce seven to eight release candidates.

Linux fans and contributors can download the very first release candidate of Linux 4.11 from the kernel.org website. You can tweak and compile and configure it for your machine. However, it is worth noting that the pre-release versions are not quite stable for multiple operations and hence recommended to be used only for testing purpose.
