Ubuntu to offer integrated CS Docker Engine

Canonical and Docker have partnered to provide customers with an integrated Commercially Supported (CS) Docker Engine on Ubuntu. The new announcement is aimed to bring a unified support for Ubuntu platform as well as CS Docker Engine to assist enterprise container operations.

As per the partnership agreement, stable and maintained releases of Docker will be officially available as snap packages on Ubuntu. Canonical, on the other hand, will provide Level 1 and Level 2 technical support for CS Docker Engine and ensure global availability of secure Ubuntu images on Docker Hub.

“The combination of Ubuntu and Docker is popular for scale-out container operations, and this agreement ensures that our joint user base has the fastest and easiest path to production for CS Docker Engine devOps,” said John Zannos, vice president of cloud alliances and business development, Canonical, in a statement.

Orchestration capabilities on mass levels

CS Docker Engine on Ubuntu will bring orchestration capabilities to enable a declarative state for distributed applications, running across a cluster of nodes. Docker considers that its deal with Canonical will deliver its agility, portability and security benefits and bring the same Docker service to Ubuntu that is yet to be debuted on most Linux distributions.

“Through our partnership, we provide users with more choice by bringing the agility, portability and security benefits of the Docker CS engine to the larger Ubuntu community. Additionally, Ubuntu customers will be able to take advantage of official Docker support,” said Nick Stinemates, vice president of business development and technical alliances, Docker.

The Canonical-Docker relation is expected to bring ease to organisations that are looking for enterprise-level open source efficiencies. Furthermore, it would expand Docker’s presence and enhance the emerging concept of containerisation.
