The much awaited CyanogenMod 14.1 featuring Android 7.1 Nougat is now available for download. This new custom ROM comes through the nightly build channel to deliver the latest experience across major flagship smartphones.

Cyanogen co-founder Steve Kondik has made the official announcement through an official blog post. “It’s been a long wait, but tonight we will kick off the first CyanogenMod 14.1 nightly builds (based on Android 7.1) for a handful of devices,” Kondik wrote in the post.

Android developers have been eying for this release for a long time, though the builds are available only for selected devices. The initial list of compatible devices includes OnePlus 3, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X, LG G3, Moto G variants, LG G4, Xiaomi Mi4, Samsung Galaxy S5 and Asus Zenfone 2. But this would grow as more developers start building the release to support other devices.

Experimental builds with limited features

CyanogenMod’s nightly builds are experimental builds that have a development cycle of their own. Since the work is in progress, you cannot expect the optimum performance from the ROM. However, it ultimately gives the newest Android Nougat to devices other than Google Pixel.

You can download any of the available CyanogenMod 14.1 nightly builds for your Android device directly from the official Cyanogen website today. It is worth noting that some core features are missing from the new release.

Last month, Cyanogen announced its modular programme to start offering its partial custom ROM to smartphone manufacturers. The initiative is also likely to bring modules to developers to enable new opportunities for the open source community.
