Apache OpenOffice has released OpenOffice 4.1.3. This new OpenOffice version hits weeks after the news about its formal closure emerged and includes various security vulnerability fixes.

OpenOffice 4.1.3 is available in 41 worldwide languages across Windows and Mac OS X. Although Apache OpenOffice has not detailed the fixes, the developer team mentions in the changelog that key security vulnerabilities are now fixed.

The updated OpenOffice also comes with new language dictionaries and some enhancements to build tools. Additionally, there are several bug fixes as well as installer and database support for devices running on OS X.

In September, Dennis E Hamilton, a volunteer vice president of OpenOffice, suggested its closure. Hamilton posted an email to the developer community for the open source project to reveal the “limited capacity” of its volunteers. However, the new release brings some hope for users.

“This release symbolises a resurgence in the project,” said Patricia Shanahan, release manager for Apache OpenOffice 4.1.3, in a statement. “We are proud to continue development of one of the most visible and widely used Apache projects.”

Based on C++, OpenOffice is leading the world of open source office suites with over 200 million downloads. It comes under the Apache License 2.0 to let developers tweak its features for their projects.

Users can download the latest OpenOffice on their systems directly from the official Apache website. Moreover, Apache OpenOffice team is calling developers to support the project for its future existence.
