Microsoft has been adding new features to Windows 10 since its first release in July 2015. But this time, the software giant is set to offer not just the latest Windows experience but also the newest Ubuntu version.

Windows 10 Build 14936, which is rolling out for both desktop and mobile versions, brings Ubuntu 16.04 (Xenial Xerius) LTS through Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL). Its predecessor came with Bash on Windows 10 to enable Ubuntu 14.40 (Trusty Tahr) by default. But Microsoft is now showing its love for Linux by delivering the most advanced Ubuntu.

It is worth noting that the changes are applicable only for Windows Insider users that are enabling WSL for the first time. Existing Ubuntu users on Windows 10, on the other hand, need to manually upgrade to Ubuntu 16.04 to get the fresh feel of open source through the proprietary platform.

“WSL will install Ubuntu version 16.04 (Xenial) instead of Ubuntu 14.04 (Trusty) in an upcoming release. This change will apply to Insiders installing new instances (lxrun.exe /install or first run of bash.exe),” said Russ Alexander, program manager at Microsoft, while announcing the WSL updates.

Some new WSL users are facing an issue of socket implementation and bug check crashes. The system is throwing the error “ATTEMPTED EXECUTE OF NOEXECUTE MEMORY”. Having said that, a fix would be released in the coming days to resolve this issue.

Microsoft has managed to change authentication changes for NAS and home file servers. The newest Windows 10 developer preview also has new Edge extensions and comes preloaded with tons of improvements for desktops and mobile devices.
