The Raspberry Pi Pico 2, which now has a new microcontroller and double the built-in memory, is available to order.
Element14 has announced the availability of the Raspberry Pi Pico 2, a powerful and compact microcontroller board developed by Raspberry Pi. Maintaining the same dimensions as the original Pico, the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 introduces significant performance improvements, thanks to the new RP2350 microcontroller, also designed by Raspberry Pi.
The RP2350 microcontroller offers several advancements over its predecessor, the RP2040, which debuted in 2021. These upgrades include a 150MHz system clock, dual Arm Cortex-M33 cores, dual Hazard3 RISC-V cores, 520KB of SRAM, and 8KB of on-chip antifuse OTP storage. The microcontroller also features enhanced security with Arm TrustZone for Cortex-M, and improved power efficiency.
The Raspberry Pi Pico 2 is equipped with 4MB of onboard flash memory, doubling the storage capacity of the original Pico. The RP2350 microcontroller integrates key security features such as OTP for boot configuration and key storage, ROM support for stage 2 bootloader authentication using a public key fingerprint in OTP, and infrastructure support for Arm TrustZone. Additionally, it includes a comprehensive set of peripherals: 2 UARTs, 2 SPI controllers, 2 I2C controllers, 24 PWM channels, a USB 1.1 controller with host and device support, and 12 PIO state machines. The upgraded QSPI interface supports double-banked cache for enhanced hit bandwidth and includes flash and PSRAM support, burst transfers, odd clock divisors, and address translation.
Eben Upton, CEO of Raspberry Pi, remarked on the release, noting that the RP2350 microcontroller and Raspberry Pi Pico 2 deliver higher performance, lower power consumption, and enhanced security, offering a versatile platform for innovation and experimentation. Simon Wade, Senior Global Product Manager for Single Board Computing at element14, emphasized the ongoing popularity of Raspberry Pi products and expressed confidence that the improved features of the Raspberry Pi Pico 2 would excite enthusiasts worldwide.
