OpenAI has announced its plans to host a developer gathering in Bengaluru in January 2024, focused on engaging with Indian developers to address safety concerns in artificial intelligence. This announcement came from Anna Makanju, OpenAI’s Vice President of Global Affairs, who expressed her enthusiasm for the event. She stated, “I am pleased to reveal that we will be organising a developer gathering featuring our VP of Engineering, Srinivas Narayanan, in Bengaluru in January, and more gatherings will follow. We intend to bring together developers from India and OpenAI’s product leaders to tackle some of the most challenging safety issues.”

Makanju highlighted the company’s recognition of India’s rich talent pool and the remarkable technology businesses operating within the country, positioning India as a pivotal player on the global AI stage. She emphasized the importance of establishing governance models for AI, citing the company’s collaboration with the Biden Administration and G7. She stressed the need for the creation of an international entity to ensure the safety of powerful technologies and equitable distribution of their benefits.

These remarks were made during Makanju’s address at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit in New Delhi. The summit also featured the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who participated in discussions surrounding AI-related issues. Minister of State for IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, revealed that the government was actively working on a multinational, consensus-driven declaration on AI as part of the event’s initiatives, aiming to mitigate risks and foster innovation.

In a previous blog post on LinkedIn, PM Modi, as the Lead Chair of GPAI, reaffirmed India’s commitment to leveraging technology, particularly AI, for the betterment of people and ensuring that nations from the Global South are not left behind in benefiting from AI advancements. He emphasized India’s dedication to paving the way for a regulatory framework that guarantees the safety and trustworthiness of AI, with a focus on uniting nations for widespread and enduring implementation.
