The IEEE Standards Association has introduced a platform called IEEE SA Open for new technical communities to collaborate on open-source projects. It said that the platform will enable independent software developers, startups, industry, academic institutions, and others to test, manage, and deploy innovative projects in a collaborative, safe, and responsible environment.

It has made the platform available to anyone developing open-source projects. It said that this platform will help developers to increase their project’s visibility, drive adoption, and grow their community.

Research, open-source development, standardisation

Robert Fish, IEEE SA president, said during a recent interview with Radio Kan that many standardisation works end up standardising technologies that are implemented through software. He added that IEEE’s idea is that the next stage of standardization might include not just producing the documents that have the technical specifications in them but also the software that implements it.

IEEE said that with this new platform added, the IEEE SA will provide developers with proven mechanisms throughout the life cycle of incubating promising technologies. This will include research, open-source development, standardisation, and go-to-market services. The platform will also expose earlier-stage technology research from academia to industry for potential capitalization opportunities.
