Japanese mobile network operator Rakuten has joined the Open Invention Network. It has done so to speed up research and development of open-source mobile network technologies.

The Open Invention Network (OIN) works to provide freedom of action for its community members and users of Linux or open-source software. The OIN has 3,100 members from the global telecoms community.

Rapid application development

A Rakuten spokesperson said in a statement that Rakuten aims to contribute to OIN through collaboration with other members to promote rapid application development and further open-source technology innovation. Rakuten already uses open-source technology in its next-generation, fully virtualised, cloud-native mobile network. It was launched in October 2019.

Rakuten also claims that by using open source technology in its network, it can streamline operations, and reduce costs. It can also increase the flexibility of its network management process. The company is in the process of scaling up its 5G mobile network to cover all 47 prefectures in Japan.
