  • Bytecode aims to allow application developers and service providers to confidently run untrusted code
  • Wasmtime, Fastly’s Lucet, Intel’s WebAssembly Micro Runtime are some codes contributed by members of the alliance

Mozilla, Intel and Red Hat have launched open source group Bytecode Alliance together that will focus to create new software foundations, build on standards like WebAssembly and WebAssembly System Interface (WASI). Some of the code the members are contributing to the Alliance are Wasmtime, a runtime for WebAssemble and WASI, Fastly’s Lucet, Intel’s WebAssembly Micro Runtime and code generator Cranelift.

According to media reports, Bytecode Alliance aims to create a secure platform that will allow application developers and service providers to confidently run untrusted code, on any infrastructure, for any operating system or device.

Untrusted code components to interact with trusted code

Microsoft and Google are not a part of the Bytecode Alliance though they were part of the group that launched the WebAssembly format. A report by techcrunch says that the alliance has been launched as there is a lot of potential for WebAssembly outside of the browser because it allows untrusted code components to interact with trusted code inside of a sandboxed environment.
