At a time, when tech giants and governments are becoming aware that enemy nation states are trying to carry-out surveillance or espionage, Google plans to develop a collaborative open-source secure chip design project called OpenTitan.
Google has entered into a partnership with several tech companies to build an develop a collaborative open-source secure chip design project called OpenTitan. Google said that OpenTitan will be run by LowRisc which is a nonprofit community. It will also be supported by ETH Zurich, G+D Mobile Security, Nuvoton Technology and Western Digital says Google.
Use in data centres, storage and computer peripherals
The collaboration aims to build trustworthy chip designs for use in data centres, storage and computer peripherals, which are both open and transparent. Making it open source will allow anyone to inspect the hardware for security vulnerabilities and backdoors claims Google.
The Open Compute Project, supported by Facebook, Intel and Google, was also created to open-source designs for its core infrastructure servers to provide better efficiencies from data centre operations.
