According to a report by Venturebeat, Github plans to open Arctic Code Vault to store and preserve open source software like Flutter and TensorFlow. The code for all open source projects will be stored in the vault on films with frames that include 8.8 million pixels each which will last for 1,000 years claims Github.

The report also says that the code will be kept in a decommissioned coal mine in Svalbard, Norway, which is one of the northernmost cities on Earth. Archivists believe the cold and near-constant conditions in Svalbard help in preservation. The Arctic Code Vault will be extended to all public repositories in February next year as per the report.

GitHub Archive Program

According to the Github Octoverse report 2019, Github is used by more than 40 million developers and at present, hosts more than 100 million repositories. The GitHub Arctic Code Vault is a part of the GitHub Archive Program which is a collaboration between Microsoft’s GitHub and groups like the Internet Archive.

The report says that the first glimpse of the public repository code will be available on second February 2020. Gradually, GitHub will develop capabilities to store code once a year or every two years. It will also provide ways for open source projects to retrieve code, but to enable that work is still under progress according to GitHub CEO Nat Friedman.
