Anyone who contributes to open source—whether through code, documentation, leadership, mentorship, design, or beyond—is eligible for sponsorship.

GitHub on Thursday launched a sponsorship programme to help open source software developers receive funding from the community that depends on their work, through their GitHub profiles.

Any GitHub user can sponsor an open source developer in the programme, called GitHub Sponsors.

The Microsoft-owned software development platform announces in a blog post –

“We’re thrilled to announce the beta of GitHub Sponsors, a new way to financially support the developers who build the open source software you use every day. Open source developers build tools for the rest of us. GitHub Sponsors is a new tool to help them succeed, too.”

GitHub will not charge fees for GitHub Sponsors

No platform fees will be charged from GitHub members when they support the work of other developers. Also, the company won’t charge payment processing fees for the first 12 months of the programme to celebrate the launch. That means 100 percent of the sponsorship goes to the developer.

Anyone who contributes to open source—whether through code, documentation, leadership, mentorship, design, or beyond—is eligible for sponsorship.

The company writes in the blog –

“GitHub Sponsors is built for funding all types of work that advance open source software. Anyone who contributes to open source—whether through code, documentation, leadership, mentorship, design, and beyond—is eligible for sponsorship.”

The programme is in beta right now and you have to join the waitlist in order to get approved as an eligible developer or contributor to receive sponsorships.

To jump start this new programme and boost community funding, the company is also launching the GitHub Sponsors Matching Fund. GitHub will match all contributions up to $5,000 during a developer’s first year in GitHub Sponsors.
