New Enterprise Associates (NEA) principal Julia Schottenstein will join Metabase’s board of directors

Open source business intelligence startup Metabase announced Tuesday that it raised $8 million in a series A funding led by New Enterprise Associates (NEA).

The VC firm, New Enterprise Associates, has previously invested in open source companies like MongoDB, Elastic, Nginx and Databricks.

Through this funding, the Metabase team believes that they will be able to hire more aggressively and improve their product and support for the community of users, developers and partners.

“Our goal has always been to become the default that anyone in the world reaches for when they want to explore their data or thread data through their company. To fully realize this vision and sustain it over the years to come, we needed help and resources,” the team wrote in a blog post.

“NEA has invested $8M in Metabase and Julia Schottenstein is joining our board of directors,” they announced.

The company also unveiled an enterprise edition of its product with features aimed at large companies.

“This edition has been the second worst-kept secret in the Metabase community. We’ve been quietly developing it over the last year and a number of our users have made the jump. It is tailored to companies running Metabase at scale (100s or 1,000s of accounts) and companies that want to provide self-service reporting to their users,” the team said.

Metabase was launched in 2014 as open source business intelligence software project. Over the past few years, the Metabase community has grown quickly. The Metabase’s free software has been downloaded over 12 million times, and it’s used by over 14,000 companies in over 100 countries.
