The Casa Node repositories are being released under the extremely permissive MIT License, which will allow anyone to “use, extend, and improve” the code.
Casa Inc. has decided to open source the code for its Lightning Network node. The company describes its Casa Node as “the easiest way to get started with Lightning and a Bitcoin full node.”
Jameson Lopp, Cypherpunk CTO of Casa, has published a detailed blog post to announce the open sourcing of the Casa Node, as well as a bug bounty program for users who disclose security vulnerabilities.
Lopp wrote, “In order to improve security for Casa customers we plan to open source as much of our trust-critical code as possible. As a first big step, today we are open sourcing the code for the Casa Node. We are also announcing the first parts of a responsible disclosure and bug bounty program.”
Certain types of code are easily copyable by users with minimal technical skills and so it doesn’t make sense to keep the repositories for that code closed, he said and added, “Information wants to be free, so we might as well lend it a helping hand.”
The Casa Node repositories are being released under the extremely permissive MIT License, which will allow anyone to “use, extend, and improve” the code.
The company believes that making the Casa Node code publicly available will result in a more robust and trustworthy platform, thus fuelling faster adoption.
The Casa Node repositories that are being open-sourced include:
Casa Node API — the middleware that provides an interface between the web dashboard and the crypto network nodes running on the device.
Casa Node Dashboard — the web application with which users interact to manage their Casa Node.
Casa Node Manager — responsible for configuring and launching docker instances to run the various services on the device.
Casa Node Updater — the software responsible for managing updates for the rest of the Casa software running on the device.
However, the Casa name, Casa logo and other corporate marks will remain copyright of Casa Inc.
