Wipro Linux contributions

IT giant Wipro has strengthened its presence in the open source space by joining the Linux Foundation. The Bengaluru-headquartered company is set to leverage the latest partnership to gain community interest and shift the industry’s focus towards its open source developments.

Wipro has preferred the Silver membership of the Linux Foundation to bolster its presence in the IT market. There are companies like Adobe, Amazon Web Services, AMD, Analog Devices, Black Duck, Broadcom, Canonical, Deloitte, Docker, EY, GitHub and Google that will sit with the latest Linux member.

“Wipro has demonstrated its support to open source through its ongoing contributions to a wide range of open source projects. This membership further reinforces that commitment. We look forward to a strong and continued collaboration for the benefit of the entire open source community,” said Mike Woster, chief operations officer, the Linux Foundation, in a joint statement.

In addition to the Linux Foundation, Wipro has joined Automotive Grade Linux as a bronze member. This new development will help the company stimulate its presence in the automotive segment by using a Linux-based open source software. It is worth noting here that Automotive Grade Linux is a project owned by the Linux Foundation, and some of its developments are already in the pipeline by Wipro.

“Our participation in multiple Linux Foundation supported projects enables us to be a part of the cutting-edge technology transformation occurring because of open source,” said Andrew Aitken, general manager and global open source practice leader, Wipro.

Dedication towards various open source developments

Wipro has a dedicated Open Source Practice and Centre of Excellence that enables the company to pilot its community developments. The Centre also has global advisory and consulting capabilities to provide end-to-end open source solutions and services to enterprise customers.

The Open Source Practice division launched dynamic monitoring framework Galaxia last year to help companies fulfill their different scalability requirements.

Additionally, Wipro regularly deploys its internal teams to crowdsource and utilise its developer talent to enhance the existing open source developments. The company also provides enterprises with its IP accelerators and pre-built, integrated, open source stack and solution packages.
