Cloudera joins Eclipse IoT community

Cloudera has joined the Eclipse Foundation to start participating in the Eclipse IoT Working Group. The latest development comes days after the company announced the acquisition of artificial intelligence (AI) focused Fast Forward Labs.

In collaboration with industry leaders such as Bosch, Eurotech, Red Hat and Samsung, Cloudera is already contributing towards Eclipse IoT Open Testbeds. This new project highlights the development of Internet of Things (IoT) solutions powered by open source software, open standard and commercial solutions. Moving forward, Cloudera is in plans to contribute its expertise in building an end-to-end framework that combines software stacks for devices, gateways and the cloud and provide persistent store and advanced analytics with machine learning support.

“With Cloudera’s commitment to open source and open standards, together with their accelerating momentum in the IoT space, we welcome their expertise and vast customer experience to our active group of contributors,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director, Eclipse Foundation, in a joint statement.

Solutions-level membership

Cloudera has marked its participation in the Eclipse Foundation as a Solutions member — sharing the stage with companies like Huawei, IBM, Samsung ARTIK and Siemens.

“Offering an all open source stack for the Internet of Things means organisations will be able to gain access to industry best practices and standards so they can use this massive flow of data to solve some of the biggest problems in the world,” said Mike Olson, chief strategy officer, Cloudera, in the statement.

Earlier this week, Palo Alto, Calif.-headquartered Cloudera acquired Fast Forward Basics to blend its open source developments with machine learning and AI practices. That acquisition is likely to help the latest move in the coming future and ultimately bring open source AI practices to the IoT space.
