Black Lab has announced the next version of its enterprise Linux. Debuted as the Black Lab Enterprise Linux v11.0.3, the new platform is based on Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS (Xenial Xerus) operating system.

Black Lab Linux 11.0.3 uses a HWE (Hardware Enablement) Linux 4.10.0-37 kernel. The kernel comes with updated components and the latest versions of default apps. Further, the list of pre-installed apps includes LibreOffice 5.4, Thunderbird 52.3, Google Chrome 5.4, Samba 4 and Webmin 1.8.

Announcing the new version, Robert Dohnert, the CEO of Black Lab said, “Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.0.3 is targeted to small to medium-sized businesses and is used in production environment around the world — ranging from businesses, education facilities, research laboratories and multimedia production facilities.”

New educational and creative features

Specifically for educational institutions, the new Black Lab Linux variant has Edubuntu and Debian Edu packages. There is also a Black Lab Studio aimed at the creative market with tools for audio editing and composition, 3D rendering tools and video editing utilities.

The Black Lab Enterprise Linux 11.0.3 version can be downloaded in four different desktop environments namely, KDE Plasma 5, LXDE, Xfce or MATE. Existing users of Black Lab can simply upgrade to the new version by visiting the its official repository.
