If you want to own an Ubuntu Touch smartphone but do not want to spend pennies on a secondary option, you can now utilise your old Nexus 5. The Google handset has got full support for the mobile-focused Ubuntu platform.

The Nexus 5 is one of the first devices to support Ubuntu Touch. It initially had limited support, but the new development has brought some advanced features to the LG-made smartphone. There is even the anticipated Convergence feature that transforms the smartphone into a full-fledged computing device when connected to an HDMI-supported screen.

“I even use it [Nexus 5] as my daily driver at the moment. I even connected it to HDMI to get an awesome convergence device,” developer Marius Gripsgård noted in a Google+ post.

It is worth noting that while Canonical’s Ubuntu Touch is now expanded on the Nexus 5, the smartphone did not receive an official Android Nougat update. Google had formally discarded the handset from the list of its update-supported models back in August last year.

You can get the full compatible Ubuntu Touch for your Nexus 5 directly through the devel_rc-proposed channel on the system-image server. This channel has is a daily build to release fresh updates directly from UBports.
