Oracle improves Linux 4.10 support within latest VirtualBox release

Oracle has released VirtualBox 5.1.14 and 5.0.32. The latest maintenance update comes with an improved Linux 4.10 kernel support to deliver an advanced experience.

The VirtualBox 5.1 series received the native Linux 4.10 support last month. That has now been expanded with the some bug fixes and improvements within the VirtualBox 5.1.14 and 5.0.32 releases.

Alongside the Linux 4.10 support, VirtualBox 5.1.14 has improved inductions for 64-bit guests and 32-bit hosts. VirtualBox 5.0.32, on the other hand, has the option to disable asynchronous I/O on the operating system running kernel from old Linux branch. The new version also automatically detects the triggering of kernel oopses.

VirtualBox 5.1.14 and 5.0.32 debut as the maintenance updates to the previous VirtualBox 5.0 build. Both have added an improved virtual machine manager, VBoxSVC process, NVMe and OVF support and an upgraded user interface. There are also some platform specific changes meant for performance optimisation.

Oracle has added a “vboxmanage modifymedium –resize” command in the VirtualBox 5.1.14 release. This command can help in preventing users from resizing their drives. Also, users on the latest VirtualBox can clone snapshots while running virtual machine in the background.

In addition, the Oracle team has fixed the protocol error that frequently occurred during operations on shared folders. Additionally, there is an improved the support for Linux kernel. The VirtualBox releases come with Linux 4.9 as well as, Linux 2.6.28 for hosts and guests. Notably, the new version of VirtualBox 5.1 series also has optimised support for Storage Performance Development Kit (SPDK), which is used by developers to write user-mode storage apps.

Oracle has even fixed an important issue with LsiLogic SCSI controller. This fixes the problem of loss of requests with symmetric multiprocessor system (SMP) guests. You can download the latest VirtualBox packages from the official VirtualBox website.
