While the world is waiting to experience Linux 4.9 on their systems, you can now choose an unofficial channel to bring the latest kernel release right on your existing Ubuntu or Debian machine. The informal development is specifically designed for 64-bit computing devices.

Open source enthusiast and developer Arne Exton has brought the latest Linux kernel to Ubuntu and Debian operating systems. Exton has developed kernel 4.9.0-11-exton that is equivalent to the stable kernel 4.9 released 161211.

“My self-compiled Ubuntu kernels can be used in all types of modern Ubuntu systems, including Mint. They can even be used in Debian Jessie (Debian 8.6) and Debian Stretch (upcoming Debian 9),” Exton wrote in a blog post.

The kernel has been compiled for 64-bit systems on Debian GNU/Linux 8.6, Debian GNU/Linux Stretch, Ubuntu 16.04 LTS, Ubuntu 16.10 Linux Mint 18 and 18.1. You can also install proprietary drivers from Nvidia alongside the new kernel to leverage the built-in graphics of your system.
