While Linus Torvalds is yet to announce the public release of Linux 4.9, the upcoming kernel has just got its presence on the first Ubuntu 17.04 Zesty Zapus repositories. The new Linux kernel would upgrade the user experience on Ubuntu through some new hardware drivers and systematic improvements.

Canonical has preferred the fifth release candidate of Linux 4.9 for Ubuntu Zesty Zapus. This package came recently, just after the “big enough” release had arrived earlier this month.

“We have uploaded our first v4.9-based Zesty kernel to the archive. It is currently based on v4.9 RC5. We will continue to rebase and upload as newer RCs are released,” the Canonical team behind the development writes in a newsletter.

So far, the open source Ubuntu family has Yakkety Yak as the latest version. It is based on Linux kernel 4.8. But Canonical is now moving forward with Zesty Zapus.

In October, CEO Mark Shuttleworth announced that Canonical is developing the next Ubuntu version as Zesty Zapus. Shuttleworth did not reveal any details about its features. However, there are speculations that the new Ubuntu build will support multiple platforms, starting from the cloud like AWS and Google Cloud to desktops and mobile devices. The software company might even opt for Linux 4.10 following the initial journey with version 4.9.
