Japan’s National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) is working on a model of a super-efficient super computer. Comes under the project AI Bridging Cloud Infrastructure (ABCI), the new supercomputer is aiming to enhance open innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) space.

AIST is targeting the innovation in open source AI field with the latest supercomputer. Through this development, Japan is aiming to accelerate the advances in AI with machine learning and deep learning.

The team behind the development of the latest supercomputer claims that it will deliver the processing capacity of 130 petaflops. With this processing speed, the Japanese offering will outperform the current leader from China, Sunway TaihuLight, that clocks at 93 petaflops processing speed.

In addition to delivering faster speed, AIST is focused on making its the most power efficient. The planned supercomputer promises to consume less than 3 megawatts of power. It uses a liquid cooling technology from French supercomputer manufacturer Atos.

AIST is set to launch the ABCI machine by the end of 2017. It will be designed at the University of Tokyo’s Kashiwa Campus.
