Android Nougat for Samsung Galaxy S4

While you might be waiting to take a tour to Android Nougat, the Samsung Galaxy S4 became so lucky to have this latest flavour even years after its launch. The new update comes from Android’s forked CyanogenMod v14.1 custom ROM.

A contributor at XDA Developers Forum, kyasu, has built a CyanogenMod 14.1 series-based firmware for the Galaxy S4. The unofficial release is specifically designed for the LTE-A model of the flagship smartphone that was launched back in late April 2013.

The CyanogenMod v14.1 release is touted to “increase performance and reliability”. However, it is not an official release as Samsung formally discontinued the software update cycles for the Galaxy S4 last year.

Enthusiasts who would like to test Android 7.0 Nougat on the old Galaxy model can install the ROM manually. It requires open source Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP) recovery to enable the advanced experience.

The contributor has additionally released the Android kernel code and documentation on a GitHub repository to let developers even tweak the Nougat for their Galaxy S4 devices. Also, this would help in developing similar ROMs for other Android devices.
