IBM has expanded its collaboration with Canonical to offer Ubuntu OpenStack on its LinuxOne, z Systems, Power Systems and OpenPOWER-based servers. The new development will enable hybrid cloud capabilities through enterprise-grade Ubuntu Advantage support.

Ubuntu OpenStack is already touted to be the “most widely used” private cloud platform with a massive share of over 55 percent in the market for production OpenStack clouds. This success would reach new levels through IBM’s portfolio.

“We are first to market with OpenStack on all IBM Systems platforms and as the market leader in OpenStack deployments, we will continue to work closely with IBM to expand OpenStack and Ubuntu support to our clients,” said John Zannos, vice president of cloud platform and alliances, Canonical, in a statement.

Canonical is set to offer the same usage and management experience to IBM platforms that was initially designed for Ubuntu x86 production OpenStack deployments. Further, “How to Guides” guidance is designed for all the clients deploying Ubuntu OpenStack on their IBM servers.

More open source enablers on board

Alongside Canonical, IBM joined hands with companies like Hortonworks, Mirantis, NGINX and Red Hat to deliver clients a range of hybrid cloud strategies with open source platform support. The company also launched its new cloud-ready systems to give a blend of public cloud, private cloud and traditional IT platforms through hybrid cloud integrations.

“A hybrid cloud model enables clients to continuously adapt while also optimizing on-premises investments. IBM is uniquely able to support the flexibility clients need across IBM Systems and the cloud,” said Tom Rosamilia, senior vice president of IBM Systems.
