The Fedora Linux community will get a chance to experience OpenSSL 1.1.0 through the upcoming Fedora 26. This new OpenSSL version will enhance security on the open source platform through latest cryptographic algorithms and some major system improvements.

Unlike the current Fedora version with OpenSSL 1.0.2h, Fedora 26 is likely to bring massive performance and security improvements using OpenSSL 1.1.0. It will bring new cryptographic algorithms as well as API for ABI stability in future versions. In addition, developers behind the operating system are working on integrating compact openssl102 package to make applications and other dependencies operable through the new API.

One of the major benefits of OpenSSL 1.1.0 in Fedora 26 is the ability to let the support team instantly release any new improvement or fixes parallel to the OpenSSL team. The updated Fedora will continue to support OpenSSL 1.0.2 for necessary applications. However, contributors using libcrypto and libssl libraries need to make their applications compatible with OpenSSL 1.1.0.

Fedora is supposed to be released in June 2017. Meanwhile, the Red Hat developer team is expected to release Fedora 25 as early as November 15 this year.
