Verizon working towards single telecom industry approach

As part of its goal of creating a single telecom industry approach to network orchestration and automation, Verizon joins the Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) as a platinum member. It will add more credibility to its open source related efforts. The Linux foundation informed that Verizon has become the eighth operator to join as a platinum member and the 16th overall.

With Verizon joining ONAP, it will now support network operators serving almost 60% of the world’s mobile subscribers. Verizon is promising to be very active in pushing open network platform to be carrier-ready, with hopes of commercial deployments in about a year’s time. It will contribute and accelerate network innovation and transformation.

Verizon has been associated with open network automation prior to formally joining the organization. It actually contributed code to ONAP in its first software release. If the code matures as expected in terms of carrier-grade stability and performance, there could be commercial deployments a year from now.
