VMware has acquired PlumGrid, a startup that offers OpenStack-based software-defined network (SDN) architecture. The latest deal helps the company expand its presence in the world of open source and enhance its developments around SDN and containers.

PlumGrid co-founder and CTO Pere Monclus has confirmed the acquisition and announced the departure of its employees through a blog post. “Our technology and IP have been acquired, and many of our employees have joined a new team,” he wrote.

Founded in 2011, PlumGrid has offerings like Open Networking Suite, Container Networking Suite and CloudApex to help several companies for their SDN developments. The Santa Clara, California-based startup has also developed some of its exclusive solutions to cater the growing demand of virtual networking, NFV and cloud infrastructure.

Through PlumGrid initially had its premise in the US market only, it is currently available across certain locations in the US, Europe and Asia. This global presence comes through open source-backed technologies.

In October, PlumGrid partnered with Quanta Cloud Technology to offer its fully integrated OpenStack solutions for hyperscale data centres. That announcement was followed by the launch of CloudSecure that brought micro-segmentation with private virtual domains, policy-based virtual tap and third-party firewall service insertion. The solution primarily targets at open infrastructure and OpenStack cloud deployments.

VMware, as a young Dell subsidiary, is quite active in expanding its IT portfolio and take the EMC business wing to new levels. It already has native solutions to offer OpenStack integration. However, PlumGrid would grow the company’s overall open source developments.
