Ubuntu 17.04 driverless printing

To reach enterprises with an advanced experience, Canonical is set to provide driverless printing on its next Ubuntu release. The new development will enable the open source platform to send print commands directly to a network printer.

Ubuntu printing maintainer at Canonical, Till Kamppeter has revealed in a community email that upcoming Ubuntu 17.04 (Zesty Zapus) will bring driverless printing. It will have support for IPP Everywhere printers as well as the printers that are supporting Apple AirPrint.

“Zesty supports printing on IPP Everywhere printers and on printers supporting Apple AirPrint (these are the printers where you can print from your iPhone and iPad),” Kamppeter writes in the email.

The arrival of driverless printing on Ubuntu will enable you to print your documents wirelessly, without even installing any drivers. This support will certainly be limited to select printer hardware.

However, with the latest attempt, Ubuntu 17.04 will become the first Linux distribution to support the next-generation of printing.

Canonical is yet to announce the release date of Ubuntu 17.04. But it got a presence in some online repositories last month. The open source platform will come with Linux 4.9 and some major system improvements over the currently Yakkety Yak release.
