Google Code-in open source contest

Google has taken another step to foster open source development and innovation. The company has announced ‘Code-in 2016’, a contest encouraging teen students to develop new open source projects.

Google has launched a list of 17 organisations that will be participating in the initiative as mentors. These organisations are supposed to create thousands of tasks for pre-university students. The tasks in the programme will focus on code, user interface, documentation, research, quality assurance and training.

“The contest, now in its seventh year, gives 13-17-year-old pre-university students the opportunity to learn under the guidance of mentors by using their skills on real-world applications that is open source projects,” writes Josh Simmons, open source programmes manager, Google, in a blog post.

There are some big names in the mentors’ list to persuade a large number of pre-graduate students, including Drupal, FOSSASIA, KDE and Wikimedia.

Google will run the Code-in contest between November 28 and January 16. Notably, it is designed for worldwide participants enrolled in a high-school or secondary school programme.
