Fedora 25

The Fedora Project has announced the general availability of Fedora 25. This new operating system is aimed to offer easy switching from Windows and macOS platforms to Linux environment.

Comes in three distinct editions — namely Fedora 25 Workstation, Fedora 25 Server and Fedora 25 Atomic Host, the latest Fedora platform is mainly designed to expand the coverage of Linux containers. But alongside the expansion, the open source operating system is targeting at Windows and macOS users.

The Workstation version of Fedora 25 comes preloaded with Fedora Media Writer that works as the default download for Windows and macOS systems. The native tool enables downloading of the current Fedora release on a removable media device to allow “test drive” on proprietary environments. This could persuade some potential Fedora users to preview the Linux-based platform on their existing Windows and macOS machines.

Current users on Fedora also get “simplified and streamlined” update system that is claimed to upgrade the experience from the preceding Fedora version in less than 30 minutes.

Additionally, the Workstation version has replaced the legacy X11 system with Wayland display server to deliver an enhanced experience by utilising modern graphics hardware.

“The Fedora operating system seeks to deliver the latest innovations in the world of free and open source software to our users, from next-generation display servers to powerful application development tool,” said Matthew Miller, Fedora Project Leader, in a statement.

Notable new components

Similar to its beta version, Red Hat-backed Fedora Project has added some notable components to final release of Fedora 25. These includes Docker 1.12, Node.js 6.5, multiple Python versions and support for Rust programming language. There are also several bug fixes and performance tweaks.

You can download the updated Fedora operating system on your system by visiting its official site. A Docker-formatted base image is also available to deliver you regular monthly updates and critical security updates right in Linux containers.
