Following the latest Ubuntu (Yakkety Yak) release, the Ubuntu community has received Ubuntu MATE 16.10 with Linux kernel 4.8 and the latest GTK 3.20 technologies. The new update is a significant milestone as it brings a full GTK3+ implementation of MATE desktop.

This is an important update for users who love MATE. The development team has tweaked the platform to users uninstall default applications. Likewise, there are updated Artwork 16.10.9 and MATE Welcome 16.10.10 to deliver a stable experience.

The development team changed the initial toolkits twice and ultimately chose GTK 3.20. “We have also upgraded through three MATE Desktop versions this cycle, starting from 1.12 to 1.14 to 1.15 and finally 1.16,” noted Martin Wimpress, Ubuntu MATE project leader, in a release.

The Ubuntu MATE team had earlier thought of migrating the platform to GTK 3+ in Ubuntu MATE 17.04 release. However, it received a generous response from a crowdfunding that helped integrate GTK3+ in Ubuntu MATE 16.10 itself. The platform also went through six months of the development cycle to deliver a robust experience.

You can test the features of Ubuntu MATE 16.10 on your system by downloading its presence from its official website. The image file requires at least 512MB of RAM.
