Canonical has released a new version of Linux kernel to address the security flaws in Ubuntu operating system. Users with Ubuntu 16.04 LTS (Xenial Xerus) and later are advised to update the kernel version.

According to Ubuntu Security Notice USB-3084-1, the major issue in current Ubuntu 16.04 LTS is a race condition within the audit subsystems of Linux kernel. The flaw enables access for a hacker to interrupt system-call auditing. The race condition can even damage the audit logs.

Another security issue allows an attacker to lock the CPU in host operating system. It lays within Linux KVM (Kernel Virtual Machine) hypervisor implementation. The race condition in Linux Chrome OS device driver enables a local attacker to cause a denial of service (DDoS) attack.

Ubuntu 12.04 LTS users can download linux-image-3.2.0-110 (3.2.0-110.151). Additionally, linux-image-3.13.0-96 (3.13.0-96.143) is published for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS and Ubuntu 16.04 LTS users are recommended to install linux-image-4.4.0-38 (4.4.0-38.57).

You can reach the Ubuntu Software or visit Synaptic Package Manager to download the latest update on your system. A single reboot after the installation of the update will implement the patches on the platform.
